Complete parsers are notoriously complicated pieces of code. You d be crazy to write a parser without a serious test suite to compare your final product against. Unfortunately, some parsing techniques make unit testing difficult because their correct behavior depends on a complete set of rules. One bug can cause errors to surface in multiple locations. One of the great features of parser combinators is that each rule can always be considered in isolation, so testing is easy! So with no more excuses, it s time to see if it works. As always, the best way to find out is to write a test! You ll be using Test::Unit and keeping your unit tests in separate files (if you called the first file sexp.rb, perhaps call this one test_sexp.rb). At its simplest, a Test::Unit test suite consists of at least one subclass of Test::Unit::TestCase. Any method declared on this object will be executed when the file is run. TestCase provides a number of easy-to-use assertion methods as you can see in the following code. For complicated test suites, each test can have its own class and can make use of methods to initialize special data structures, and so on. But for these purposes, one method per test will be fine.
